Coimbatore: A road safety awareness seminar was inaugurated by Minister for Municipal Administration, S.P Velumani and Minister for Transport M.R.Vijayabhaskar at a private hotel in Chinniyampalayam.

A road safety committee to create awareness on road safety among school children was also set up on the occasion.
Speaking at the event, Minister S.P Velumani said "Although the Centre has enacted various laws on road safety it is essential to make a few changes to benefit people".
He noted that when GST was introduced, the Centre has paid heed to the changes requested by the State Government and even other states are benefited of it.
When questioned about the fines imposed for traffic rule violations, he said that if the rules are followed, then there is no need for paying fine.
He also noted that Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami was going to various countries and signed MOU and added that various road safety awareness programs would be held in the future.
While addressing the media, Minister Vijayabaskar said that "Chief Minister of TN has been successful in talking to the Centre about the problems in the transport sector and said that he is taking various measures to minimize road accidents".
He noted that the efforts of the transport authorities had reduced road accidents in Tamil Nadu by 24 % in a year. And the number of accidents and casualties has gone down by 15 % in the last six months.
Minister Vijaybaskar said that out of the 94 law amendments in the transportation sector, 5 law amendments are affecting the state ownership and the state govt has insisted on correcting them.
"Although the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has emphasized that separate laws cannot be devised to Tamil Nadu, we have asked for some amendments to be made on the impact of the move". he added.
He also said that violating the traffic rules is much higher, and so are the fines for it. To avoid accidents, one has to follow the rules. He noted that people don't follow traffic rules, and only very few villagers wear a helmet.
Minister Vijayabaskar noted that the death toll from road accidents has now declined from 47 to 33 per day and added that as the road condition in Tamil Nadu are excellent and so there is an increase in the speed of the vehicles.
When the reporters asked him if the fines imposed on traffic rule violation will be reduced he said "that the penalty is a Centre scheme devised for nationwide and it will not be changed and added that the accident rates would be reduced if the fines are higher".
